CHARLESTON, S.C. —
A 38-year-old man used the stolen identity of a College of Charleston graduate to get into graduate degree programs and to eventually land a job with Boeing, according to the State Law Enforcement Agency.
Billy Joe Bell, of North Charleston, is charged with identity fraud, according to Special Agent Thom Berry.
A SLED affidavit said that on May 10, 2018, Bell went to the registrar at the College of Charleston, impersonating a graduate. He presented a sworn affidavit indicating he wanted to change his name, birth date and Social Security number. He changed the information and acquired the student’s College of Charleston identification number, transcript and undergraduate degree, the affidavit said.
SLED said Bell then used the paperwork to enter graduate degree programs at Western Governor’s University in Salt Lake City and the Citadel. He also used it as his background to get a job at Boeing, SLED said.
Bell is charged with identity fraud. He is being held in the Charleston County Detention Center.
