PICKENS COUNTY, S.C. —
A 40-year-old man and a 12-year-old girl who were reported missing overnight were found Tuesday morning and the man was taken into custody, officials said,
Daniel Falu had Oconee County warrants out for his arrest, according to Piers Womack, with the Pickens County Emergency Management Office. He was led away in handcuffs, according to WYFF News 4 crews at the scene.
The two were last seen Monday about 9:30 p.m. on kayaks in Twelve Mile River at Cateechee Beach Park near Central, Womack said.
Search crews combed the area for them Monday night, but didn't find them, Womack said.
About 10 minutes before the search was set to resume Tuesday morning, the two walked up to rescuers, according to Womack. They were not hurt, he said.
It's still unclear where Falu and the girl were overnight.
Falu was charged with probation violation out of Oconee County, which is unrelated to the kayak incident, deputies said.
Falu was arrested in April and charged with attempted murder in the beating of a man on Owens Road in Seneca. Deputies said Falu also cut the man with a box cutter.
Deputies found Falu three weeks later and took him into custody. He also faced drug charges after deputies found cocaine in one of his pockets at the time of his arrest, deputies said.
Falu was booked into the Oconee County Detention Center on charges of attempted murder and possession of cocaine.
There was no word on when he was released.
A family member said the girl, her mother and Falu went to the park together Monday. They said the girl was in a kayak and needed help, so Falu went in to help her. That was the last time they were seen Monday night, the family member said.
Officials said the girl's mother originally told them her daughter was 13 years old, but officials later learned she was 12.
