GREENVILLE, S.C. —

Deputies with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office have arrested 56 year-old Jose Jesus Navarrette for kidnapping after an investigation showed he tried to take a young child from her grandmother, according to Lt. Ryan Flood.

Flood said deputies responded about 2:45 p.m. Sunday to the Goodwill on Blue Ridge Drive in Greenville.

He said they had gotten a report of an attempted abduction.

When deputies arrived. they took Navarrette into custody.

During the course of investigation deputies learned that before getting the 911 call, the child’s grandmother was walking with the victim and her other grandchildren on the sidewalk outside the store.

Flood said the grandmother bent down to help one of the kids with their shoe and as she looked up, she saw Navarrette grabbing one of her granddaughters and then picking the child up and walking away with her.

The grandmother quickly approached Navarrette and was able to pull her grandchild back into her arms, Flood said. He said the grandmother pushed Navarrette away before taking all of the children inside the Goodwill to get away from him.

After noticing the suspect was following them, the grandmother called for help, Flood said. As the grandmother walked behind the counter to get away from the man, she noticed he was still following her and actually came towards her behind the counter, according to Flood.

She was soon able to get help from a store employee and another customer, and 911 was called.

A woman who gave birth alone in her jail cell in Denver is suing the city after deputies and nurses allegedly ignored her pleas for help during about five hours of labor.

"To characterize it as medical care is a joke," said Sanchez's lawyer, Mari Newman, who noted that the open toilet several feet away from where she gave birth was blacked out by the city in the video.

The federal lawsuit filed Wednesday says that jail officials "cruelly chose convenience over compassion" by not calling for an ambulance after Sanchez's water broke and she was bleeding. It says a van was requested to take Sanchez, who was in a medical cell at the jail, to the hospital. But jail workers knew the ride likely wouldn't be available for hours until the morning booking process was finished, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit says that no nurse dried or warmed the baby or cleared mucus from his mouth for several minutes and that jail nurses did not have equipment to cut the baby's umbilical cord. It was not severed until firefighters arrived about 15 minutes after the baby was born.

The Denver County Sheriff's Department said Thursday that it has since changed its policy to ensure that pregnant inmates who are in any stage of labor are immediately taken to the hospital. Previously, decisions about whether to move a pregnant inmate were left to jail nurses, but deputies are now authorized to call for an ambulance for someone in labor, department spokeswoman Daria Serna said.

The jail's nurses are hired from Denver Health, the city's public hospital, and the sheriff's department said that Sanchez was in a medical unit under the care of nurses at the time she delivered.

Denver Health declined to comment on a pending lawsuit but defended its work in the jail. "Denver Health provides high-quality medical care to thousands of inmates every year," spokesman Simon Crittle said.

Sanchez was not available for comment. Last year, she told Denver KDVR-TV, which first reported on the delivery, that the jail sees inmates as "garbage."

"I know I was there because I was at fault for that I did wrong — and I didn't deserve that and especially not my baby," she said.

William Harmon Williams of Salley in Aiken County now faces two charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor under 11

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - Authorities say charges against a man accused of sexually assaulting children at a home have been upgraded after an investigation revealed that the assault was worse than originally believed. 

Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell announced that 37-year-old William Harmon Williams of Salley in Aiken County now faces two charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor under 11.

“The initial charges were bad enough but the ongoing investigation revealed the assault was worse than originally believed,” Ravenell said. “So the charges have been upgraded to reflect that.”

Williams was originally charged with two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, a lesser charge that involving groping.

“We have since discovered there was a more serious type of assault involved in this case,” Ravenell said. “This is one of those cases that make you angry since children rely on adults for safety. In this case with this trusted individual, they couldn’t.”

Williams arrest stems from an investigation when the sheriff’s office were notified of a possible sexual misconduct activity on Aug. 1 when two Orangeburg County children were reportedly assaulted.

Accordin to a report, a parent in the home was informed of the sexual contact when she confronted a child after observing what she believed to be unusual behavior on the part of the children.

The sheriff’s office said Williams was no stranger to the family or children and had been staying with the family for a few weeks prior to the incidents.

“When confronted by investigators, Williams admitted to having assaulted the victims, according to the warrants,” OCSO officials said."Williams faces a mandatory minimum 25 years and up to life in prison on each count, if convicted of the upgraded charges."

Investigators say Williams’ two original charges will be rescinded.

“The original bond of $50,000 set on August 6 has also been rescinded and now is denied,” OCSO officials said."Williams will have to apply for any bond consideration in front of a circuit court judge at a later date."

2 Children Dead, 10 Injuried when Suspect Steals a Police Car, Going 97 MPH and Crashes into other Vehicles.

DAYTON, Ohio —

Two children were killed and nine people were injured Monday evening after a man driving a stolen police cruiser crashed at high speed into a SUV and a minivan in Dayton, Ohio, police said.

The suspect, Raymond Andrew Walters Jr., was driving 97 mph when he ran a red light and plowed into the two vehicles, Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl said at a press conference Tuesday.

Walters had been on active parole, and police suspect methamphetamine may have played a part in the incident, Biehl said.

The incident unfolded when Walters' father was trying to take his son to a hospital for mental health issues, but when the suspect realized where they were going, he began assaulting his father, Biehl said.

Suspect stole a police cruiser, police said

The suspect left his father bleeding from head and face wounds, and took off in his father's Chevy truck, Biehl said.

Walters crashed the truck into a tree in nearby Riverside, Dayton police said.

When a Riverside officer responding to a 911 call about the accident got out of his police cruiser to check on the driver, the suspect got in and took control of the cruiser from the passenger side, Biehl said.

The Riverside officer tased Walters twice, Biehl said, but that didn't stop the suspect from taking off in the cruiser.

Running the police lights and sirens, Walters reached a maximum speed of 101 mph, Biehl said. He was not being pursued by police at the time of the accident, the police chief said.

The Honda minivan was carrying seven children and one adult, all family members, Biehl said. There were three adults in the SUV, the police said.

Another child is badly hurt, police said

All occupants were taken to local hospitals and at least three of them were in life-threatening condition when they were transported, Lt. Eric Henderson said.

Two of the children later died, he said.

A third child remains in critical condition, Biehl said.

Two Riverside officers sustained minor injuries when the suspect struck their vehicle.

The suspect was injured in the crash and is in stable condition in a hospital, Biehl said.

The police cruiser broke into several parts when it hit the minivan, Biehl said. Still, "counterforce was necessary to take Walters into custody," according to a police presentation.

Walters' criminal history includes aggravated burglary and robbery, possession of drugs, domestic violence and assault, police said. He was released from prison in August.

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Authorities made three separate arrests in the North Charleston area involving violent crimes.

Public Information Officer Karley Ash stated other agencies assisted in the arrests of the three suspects. The cases were not connected, Ash added.

Montez William Jenkins charged with four counts of Attempted Murder and Possession of a Weapon during the Commission of a Violent Crime. The incident took place on Northwoods Boulevard and Ashley Phosphate, according to officials.

Malik Taylor is charged with four counts of Attempted Murder and Possession of a Weapon During Committing of a Violent Crime. Officials stated that the incident took place at Wal-mart on Center Pointe Drive.

Brandon Hazelton is charged with Murder and Possession of a Firearm during a Violent Crime. The incident took place on Nibs lane, according to the report.
