White and his girlfriend heard the men trying to kick in the side door of the home. The girlfriend hid under a bed and called 911 as White hid in the bathroom.
Deputies said Cummings fired a 45-caliber pistol through the door of the bathroom, wounding White in the upper shoulder and neck. Cummings then forced his way into the bathroom, demanded money and shot White again, evidence showed.
Deputies arrived at the home within three minutes and found Cummings and the other man still inside the house. They were both captured within minutes, deputies said.
White was taken to the hospital, where he died.
Deputies said White’s girlfriend stayed under the bed until deputies were in the home and she was unharmed.
Cummings was convicted of murder, first-degree burglary, attempted armed robbery, conspiracy and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
He was sentenced to 35 years in prison.
“The convictions in this case were made possible by the prompt and professional actions of both the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and our 911 Dispatchers,” Solicitor Walt Wilkins said.
