A Traffic Stop ultimately led to the Discovery of Three Bodies in a Massachusetts home, police say.
Authorities said they attempted to pull over Stewart Weldon, 40, for a broken tail light Sunday, but he allegedly refused to stop and led them on a chase before smashing into a police cruiser. He wrestled with officers before they were finally able to handcuff him.
A woman found inside his car allegedly told authorities Weldon had held her captive for a month, sexually assaulted her and beat her with a hammer and other objects when he got angry.
"Thank you for saving my life," the woman, whose identity has not been released, told officers, according to the police report. "I never thought I would get away."
She was taken to a hospital with injuries that included stab wounds to her abdomen and a possible fractured jaw. Authorities called her injuries "grotesque."
Weldon was charged with the kidnapping, sexual assault and torture of the woman. He pleaded not guilty Tuesday and is being held on $1 million bail.
Stewart Weldon was arrested after a traffic stop. Springfield Police Department
On Wednesday evening, police went to a home in Springfield after his mother called authorities to report a foul odor, according to local reports. It is believed Weldon lives at the address.
There, authorities made a grim discovery.
Two bodies were found "in and around" the home when they arrived, Hampden County District Attorney Anthony Gulluni said Thursday. A third body was later found on the property.
He did not elaborate on where the bodies were found, or their causes of death. He also did not reveal their genders.
Weldon has not been charged in connection to the deaths.
"We’re considering this an active investigation," Gulluni told reporters Thursday. "We’re not declaring any suspects."
He said the investigation would continue Friday.
"All hands are on deck from the Springfield Police Department," he said.
Residents of the busy neighborhood said Weldon kept to himself.
"If they had never stopped him for the tail light, then no one would have known," Brenda Quinones, 23, told the Boston Globe. "It’s just too creepy."
