Homicide suspect caught at sea
The U.S. Coast Guard intercepted the barge where the man worked.

Three years after allegedly killing a South Carolina teen and dumping her body, a man was caught Saturday on a barge off Ossabaw Island southeast of Savannah.
The fifth suspect in the 1998 slaying of the 19-year-old looked surprised when U.S. Coast Guard officers from Tybee Island boarded the barge he worked on and detained him.
The Coast Guard had intercepted the northbound barge about 1:30 p.m. in the Intracoastal Waterway near Kilkenny Creek, just east of Ossabaw Island.
"I don't believe he had much of an idea this was going to happen," said Petty Officer Kevin Madison of Coast Guard Station Tybee Island.
"Everything went smooth."
Madison said he didn't know the barge's destination or departure point.
Jacob Taylor, 46, was arrested later on suspicion of murder and taken to Chatham County jail.

Acting on information from Charleston County detectives, officers with the Coast Guard, Chatham County police and Georgia Department of Natural Resources helped in the arrest.
Taylor was expected to be extradited to Charleston County, S.C, where his four alleged cohorts in the killing were arrested during pre-dawn raids Thursday. They were being held in jail without bail.
The five men are accused of shooting Shannon McConaughey of St. Stephen, S.C., and dumping her body in the woods.
She was last seen leaving the Cracker Barrel restaurant in North Charleston after eating with friends in her Amway sales group, according to newspaper reports.
The case remained unsolved for three years until Thursday when more than 50 Charleston County sheriff's deputies made covert raids at five houses and took four suspects into custody.
Authorities learned the fifth suspect was on a barge. A Coast Guard helicopter from Savannah had identified the barge Friday, allowing officials to track the vessel.
Charleston County detectives were going to wait until the barge entered South Carolina waters, but feared Taylor may have heard of the arrests of the other four suspects, so they wanted to act quickly, Madison said.

The St. Stephen woman was last seen at a North Charleston restaurant in January 1998. Charleston County Sheriff’s Office investigators alleged that Randall Taylor raped and shot her and that the other men helped dispose of her body. Her car was burned in the woods near McClellanville. Her body was found months later.
Detectives arrested Randall Taylor and the four others in 2001, but prosecutors dropped the murder charges, citing insufficient evidence.

“We have looked at that case a number of times during the course of assisting the Brittanee Drexel investigation,” Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon said Monday. “We have not made many advances, but we have continued to revisit it as the Drexel case has unfolded.”
Since his release, Randall Taylor has been arrested only on misdemeanor charges, including giving false information to the police.
