Children in Chicago are dying from gun violence at a rate three times higher than last year, according to a Sun-Times analysis.

Ten children aged 15 or younger have been shot dead so far this year, up from the three children fatally shot during the same time period in 2020, according to Sun-Times records. And that’s more than the number killed in all of 2019, the data shows.

Out of nearly 1,500 shooting victims so far this year, at least 52 victims were 15 or younger, compared to 43 last year, an increase of 21%. The increase in child shooting victims tracks closely with the overall spike in Chicago shootings — adults included — of 20.3%.

“I don’t understand how we are not as a city absolutely outraged,” said the Rev. Michael Pfleger, a longtime crusader against gun violence who leads St. Sabina Church in Auburn Gresham. “Our children are becoming extinct.”

 Ninety-three total shootings have been reported along Cook County’s area expressways as of June 7, Illinois State Police told Fox News Wednesday. Meanwhile, there were 128 expressway shootings reported in 2020, the agency said. 

Local CBS Chicago was first to report the startling statistics, noting that the figures show there are, on average, over 10 expressway shootings per month. Meanwhile, just three arrests have been made in the 221 shootings reported since the start of 2020, according to the report.

 More than three times more kids have died from gun violence on Chicago’s streets than during the same time in 2020, as a local community leader lamented that "our children are becoming extinct," according to a recent report. 

The Chicago Sun-Times analyzed this year’s crime statistics and found that the rate at which children are being fatally shot is three times higher than it was during the same period in 2020. 

Gun violence has claimed the lives of 10 kids, age 15 and under, so far in 2021, compared to the three reported year-over-year, the outlet reported, citing its crime records. This year’s shooting statistics show more children have already been mortally wounded than in 2019 as a whole, according to the Sun-Times.
